Islamabad: In a landmark move for Pakistan’s energy sector, the Universal Gas Distribution Company (UGDC) has signed the country’s first private-to-private (BtB) gas deal with Hungary-based MOL Pakistan. Under the agreement, UGDC will purchase gas from MOL and distribute it to private industrial consumers through the SNGPL network, marking the beginning of operations under the Third Party Access (TPA) rules.
UGDC CEO Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha said the company has worked for 14 years to ensure private gas supply and is the only private entity licensed by OGRA to distribute natural gas. The deal, he noted, reflects the government’s commitment to liberalizing the gas market and ensuring reliable energy for industries.
The development is expected to ease gas shortages, support industrial growth, and reduce the country’s annual oil import bill by approximately $120 million. MOL and its partners have invested $2.8 billion in Pakistan’s oil and gas sector, with UGDC now ready to supply natural gas directly to its industrial customers.
