UGDC Commends Government’s Landmark Approval for LNG Import License

Islamabad, February 25, 2016 — Universal Gas Distribution Company (UGDC) proudly announces the receipt of a groundbreaking license from the Government of Pakistan, authorizing the import and sale of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) across the nation. This pivotal development marks a significant stride towards revitalizing the compressed natural gas (CNG) sector and addressing the country's energy challenges.

After a comprehensive 19-month evaluation process, including legal reviews, public consultations, and third-party audits conducted by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), UGDC has been granted the authority to procure LNG from both domestic and international suppliers. This initiative empowers UGDC to supply LNG to consumers nationwide, fostering a more resilient and diversified energy landscape.

UGDC Chairman Brigadier (Retired) Iftikhar Ahmed and CEO Ghiyas Paracha expressed their appreciation for the government's foresight, stating, "This unprecedented decision not only revitalizes a struggling industry but also sets a precedent for public-private collaboration in energy solutions. It's a testament to the government's commitment to sustainable economic growth and energy security."

The allocation of 75 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of pipeline capacity to UGDC underscores the government's dedication to facilitating this initiative. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources has initiated steps to formalize commercial agreements between UGDC and gas utilities, ensuring the seamless integration of LNG into the existing energy infrastructure.

This strategic move is anticipated to yield substantial economic and environmental benefits:

  • Economic Savings: An estimated annual reduction of $1.4 billion in oil import expenditures.

  • Employment Opportunities: Revitalization of the CNG sector is expected to preserve and create jobs for approximately 450,000 individuals.

  • Environmental Impact: Transitioning to LNG is projected to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by nearly six million tons annually, contributing to Pakistan’s environmental sustainability goals.

UGDC remains committed to collaborating with governmental bodies and industry stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative, aiming to provide affordable, clean, and reliable energy to the people of Pakistan.
