The Case for Local Gas: A Path Toward Energy Security and Economic Stability

Pakistan's domestic gas sector has long played a vital role in supporting economic growth, industrial development, and energy security. For decades, locally produced natural gas powered industries, fueled electricity generation, and provided affordable energy to households across the country. Today, however, declining production, reduced exploration activity, policy uncertainty, and mounting financial challenges threaten the sustainability of this strategic national resource.

As indigenous gas reserves decline and dependence on imported LNG increases, Pakistan faces growing exposure to global market volatility, foreign exchange pressures, and rising energy costs. The slowdown in exploration and production has discouraged investment, while delayed payments, circular debt, and regulatory obstacles have further weakened confidence in the sector. These challenges have limited the ability of both local and international energy companies to develop new gas resources and expand production.

Restoring the health of Pakistan's gas sector requires a renewed commitment to domestic exploration and development. Timely settlement of producer receivables, enforcement of contractual obligations, transparent pricing mechanisms, and a stable policy environment are essential for attracting investment and encouraging the development of new and marginal gas fields. Commercially viable gas must be allowed to reach productive consumers, while unnecessary bureaucratic barriers that hinder upstream investment should be removed.

Natural gas remains one of Pakistan's most valuable strategic assets. Increased domestic production can reduce import dependence, conserve foreign exchange reserves, strengthen industrial competitiveness, and enhance long-term energy security. By prioritizing local gas exploration and implementing long-overdue structural reforms, Pakistan can transform its gas sector from a source of financial strain into a driver of sustainable economic growth and national resilience.

The path forward lies in creating a commercially viable, investor-friendly framework that supports exploration, rewards efficiency, and ensures the responsible development of indigenous energy resources. With the right policies and consistent implementation, local gas can once again become a cornerstone of Pakistan's energy future and economic stability.
